Renaissance: (lit) renew, reborn

OUR HISTORY

The Renaissance Baptist Church of Brooklin opened for public services on Sunday, January 5th, 2003. For many months before that first Sunday, both prayers and plans were made by a number of Churches in the Durham region, and Feb Central Church Planting, regarding a new start at the former home of Meadowcrest Baptist Church.

Invited by these groups to become involved, Pastor and Church Planter John Blackman, his wife Janine and 3 daughters began seeking people with a passion for God. They were looking for those interested in the opportunity to begin something new, beginning in Brooklin and extending as far as God chooses. After about 6 months of ground work, God had blessed with a group of brave people and by “launch Sunday” a nucleus of a congregation had begun to form.

Years have passed since those Church Plant days, and while we are now an established congregation within the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches we still feel close to our new Church Plant identity!

We believe we are here on purpose. We feel specifically called to bring the Good News of Jesus to the village of Brooklin. We have room for you to come and hear what that is about. If you are already a Christ Follower new to the area, we would love to have you join with us as we seek to be faithful witnesses right here where you live!

WHAT WE BELIEVE

If I was asked to summarize it really briefly here I would say that our Church believes that it ( reality ) is all about the gospel message of the life death and ressurection of Christ, and what that life giving message means for all people everywhere as revealed in the Bible. Biblical authority is big for us, but we don't worship the Bible we worship the Christ as revealed in the scriptures. If you have ever wondered what the often used but seldom understood term " Evangelical" means we reccomend you read a highly regarded definition written a few years ago by a great Canadian Theologian.

OUR MISSION

We understand our mission as "Joining God in what he is doing in our world, reconciling a people for his own glory, through the life changing message of salvation in Jesus Christ our Lord.

It is intentionally unoriginal, in fact we hope it is just our way of saying the same thing Jesus said in what is commonly called " The Great Commission" Matthew 28: 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
As a community of faith identifying itself as a Christian Church, we believe that what we are to be "about" has been determined long ago by our founder Jesus Christ . If you would like to read a longer description of what we believe our mission is please click this link HERE.

OUR LEADERSHIP

  • JOHN BLACKMAN PASTOR

John has been involved with Renaissance Church since it began over 13 years ago. He's married to Janine and they have three daughters and five grandkids. When it comes to preaching, John likes to think that beyond answering the hard questions of life, the Bible actually provides the right questions to have answered! He is fond of both reading and road cycling. Lately he has become a newbie vintage audio fan (got any LP's you want to trade?).  He's available almost anytime for a coffee and is always glad to talk.

  • ANDrew brubacher ELDER

Andrew is a Chiropracter by day and gives leadership to many areas at Renaissance in his "free time". His wife Jen is also an important leader in our Church. If you visit us on a Sunday Andrew is likley leading worship. Andrew is part of an extended family with a remarkable number of Pastors Missionaries and Christian leaders of various types. We are glad to be the beneficiaries of all that God has built into his life.

  • TIAGO CAMPOS ELDER

Tiago is the happy husband of Kelly and busy father of two young boys. He brings artful goodness to our leadership team and his day job as a professional mediator brings him many other skills that cross over to his ministry with us at Renaissance. TC also functions as the token vegetarian in this line up!

  • JANINE BLACKMAN CHILDREN'S ministry

Janine's contributions to the children at Renaissance has helped foster a team of volunteers that teach and instructed the most precious members of our congregation. Despite her busy schedule as a full time nurse, pastors wife and mother of three, Janine has been at the forefront of organizing classes and activities for RBC since it began. Her devotion is a blessing to all parents and children who ever attended Renaissance.
